Dear Cheryl, We went LIVE with POM 1 1/2 years ago, and are now building PCS. I can give you some lessons learned with POM. First, we stopped printing the lab results with the following exceptions: Results with Critical Values, all STAT results, Significant Changes and Positive MIC Results. We have been printing a weekly lab summary and filing in the paper chart; if the system goes down, there is something to refer to. When we went LIVE with POM, we installed a second printer on each patient nurses' station and are using pink paper only. We felt this would avoid the mixup with other printed materials (H&P, Labs, E-mail, etc.). Additionally, we felt the pink paper acts as a visual cue that an order has been generated, as our physicians may not be on the unit (or even in the hospital) when entering orders. Providers are instructed to speak with a nurse if they order anything STAT, just as they would before. As far as acknowledging orders, the Orders field on the Status Board will show ACK if a new order is placed, and NEW if the orders have been acknowledged, but the user hasn't looked at them. The Access Dx allows you to limit how long the NEW will appear for any access group, as you know. We are concerned about getting rid of the POM order sheets, and will likely wean them as users become more confident in PCS. I'd be happy to speak with you about POM if you have further questions. We've been very successful with our POM implementation, with 100% provider compliance and < 2% telephone orders entered by RNs. We have a small group of physicians who are working with us (Information Systems) to work through issues and streamline processes. We have some questions for those of you who are finding success with this implementation. How do your nurses know when a physician has placed an order? Have you built some sort of alerts? Status board? Other method? Are you still printing Lab results and Radiology reports to the nursing units? If you are how are you handling this problem? (We are printing the orders from POM when a physician places the orders. These become mixed in a huge stack of orders, results and reports, and orders are being missed. Then physicians are being called again because the nurse doesn't realize that the order has already been placed. Thus, the physicians are getting angry.) Any feedback, ideas, assistance will be greatly appreciated!
