This has been a big discussion for us as well. We currently use POM sheets and
the clericals and nurses are pretty dependent on them. We are about to use the
acknowledge feature from the status board beginning in June and slowly wean off
the POM sheets. The clericals have status boards and they will notify the nurse
if there is a stat order. There is not really a way to alert them unless they
all carry pagers or check e-mail frequently (not). We are also about to upgrade
our companion phones. They have the capability to interface with OE to send a
message to the nurse's phone when a new order is placed. This is not something
we purchased but may add later.

We are struggling with POM trying to bring it live. We have a small group of
physicians who are working with us (Information Systems) to work through issues
and streamline processes. We have some questions for those of you who are
finding success with this implementation.

How do your nurses know when a physician has placed an order? Have you built
some sort of alerts? Status board? Other method?

Are you still printing Lab results and Radiology reports to the nursing units?

If you are how are you handling this problem? (We are printing the orders from
POM when a physician places the orders. These become mixed in a huge stack of
orders, results and reports, and orders are being missed. Then physicians are
being called again because the nurse doesn't realize that the order has already
been placed. Thus, the physicians are getting angry.)

Any feedback, ideas, assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Laura Wilson
