My first question is; Why? The standard actually applies to the specimen collections and direct patient treatment. Once collected, to track processing, the barcode number within LAB & MIC becomes the primary identifier as far as instruments are concerned. Having previously worked/managed in laboratories for 30+ years, I can say we never matched results based on patient DOB - the barcode number/specimen number and patient name were used as the identifiers (which technically meets the intent of the standard). The goal does not specify which 2 identifiers are used. Consider unidentified unresponsive trauma patient identification in ER and ancillary testing - you most likely won't even have a birthdate unless they're carrying a photo ID (which may not match their appearance after a trauma) that can be verified. Don't view the PSG solutions as cast in concrete - there may always be an exception that requires using alternative methods to meet the same goal. Save your money. My two cents' worth, Paul

Our Organization has chosen Patient Name and Patient DOB as the 2 patient identifiers. We have asked Meditech to add the DOB to all the Lab and Micro Result Entry Screens as that is the screen we are in when phoning results. After phoning results, we add a Result Text Comment stating who we spoke to, date/time, etc. Has anyone else asked for this custom? If not, do you have a need for it as we do? Thanks, Cheryl Rozell LIS Coordinator Patti Schillaci, RN Clinical Application Analyst Finger Lakes Health System Information Systems 196 North Street Geneva, New York 14456 315-787-4042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ********CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE************ This message & any included attachments are intended only for the addressee.
