John, I can't disagree with much of anything you say. I'd offer however: -which automobile manufacturer will sell more cars that people like and find useful, the one that makes cars their own designers like and enjoy driving or the one that actively surveys their market and asks people which features/curves/engines/etc they like better? The one that brings prototypes to the auto shows to show them off and get feedback or the one that slaps some sheet metal around some seats and an engine and says "well, you didn't tell us what to build so we built this because we liked it." I know there is opensolaris and public forums and beta software testers but maybe there needs to be more? I'm not blaming you or others, just suggesting that "feel free to tell me what you want" and "Do you like this? Would you rather have this? Does this help you? If this doesn't help what changes could you suggest to it?" are two distinctly different feedback mechanims. One is offered with no promise of it being done or proof of need. The other is requested, asked for, interest is users is exhibited and maybe even better proof of results is implied in the way it is asked. -With opensolaris it would be cool to see other tool makers contribute rfe enhancements to mdb perhaps since there are some very bright folks out there that could make Solaris core software much better. (Not just folks outside of Sun but fokls within Sun not in engineerign working on other tools.) I'm not sure what sort of encouragement they might need to consider contributing or how well their work and ideas would be embraced and those things (or others?) might make the difference might make the difference. Maybe a direct dialogue between the mdb folks and the other tool folks would resolve this? Just a thought. Later, Kevin.
