When I have seen this, it was either:
1. IP Fragmentation. Make sure CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG is set in
your kernel configuration.
2. MTU size. Make sure your MTU on the SLIP/PPP side matches the
MTU on your ethernet side. This number will nearly always be
1500.
