1400 connections... well.. I don't know how much usage you're actually
figuring per connection really... but it very much sounds like you're
talking about quite a bit more than a single machine can handle (whether it
be Linux, Sun, SGI, or whatever).

If your requirements are actually as heavy as you seem to indicate, you
probably need to be looking at quite a bit of dedicated hardware and
probably a small company worth of techs to support it.  You're talking about
a small-medium ISP.
