I've been using IP masq for quite some time without a problem.
Then a couple of months ago, it started having a problem. Probably after I
changed some security stuff on my linux box, but I don't know for sure.
Undoing the changes I made didn't rectify the problem.
I'm running IP Masq over a CSLIP connection using dip. If any programs (it
does the same thing with HTTP, FTP, ICQ, and TELNET) from my Win95 machines
attempt to access the outside world through IP Masq, it will work briefly
(for a couple of seconds or less), and then the CSLIP connection completely
locks up. When this occurs, neither the Win95 machines nor the Linux box
itself can access the internet through the CSLIP connection. This condition
persists until I kill dip and start up the connection again.
The lockup appears to be related to DNS somehow. If I have my linux box
lookup the site ahead of time... so that the DNS information for that site
will appear in named's cache... then I can access that site without a
problem.
The lockup specifically appears to happen when it is trying to reverse
lookup the domain name from the IP address of the site which is being
connected to. I don't know why it's trying to reverse lookup the address.
Especially since the original lookup to get the IP address in the first
place succeeds. Nor do I know why it would lock up when it tries to.
As I said, it worked initially just fine. For quite a long time. I don't
know what I might have done to change it, or if I did anything. It was
recommended to upgrade to 2.0.33 kernel, and I did that. It made no
difference.
All other functions of this linux box and network work correctly without any
problems. It's very stable.
I tried several of the things I've read about. With echo'ing '1' to
IPV4_forward (or whatever it was)... it was already set to that. I tried
setting the MTU the same on eth0 and sl0.
The DNS on my linux box gives eth0 and sl0 the same name (though they both
have differen IP addresses, of course). Could this cause confusion?
Other than that, I've run out of things to try.
