I'm running slackware as well, but masquerading is a kernel issue, so it should
be independent of the distribution. The only difference is the location and
naming of the startup scripts (aka rc files).

I recommend switching to kernel 2.0.33. The kernel you are running is
susceptible to the so-called teardrop attack, i.e., out-of-band packets.

I am running my Linux box 24/7, since I have my website on there. No problem
