Well I am not sure :)
But as soon as I made the linux machine dial
directly into my ISP I was able to straight away get ipportfw to work instantly.
Their must be been some sort of routing issue on
the main gateway (i was accessing the internet from another linux gateway) even
though we have lots of public ip addresses to play with....
