There is a package known as "isapnptools" which you can use to configure
a plug-n-play modem under Linux.  It seems to work fairly well, from
what I hear, although I have managed to avoid all plug-n-play hardware
so far.  Lucky me...  :)

My opinion is that external modems are wonderful because you can see
the status of the connection by looking at the blinky lights.  Internal
modems give me no indications at all of what's happening, except perhaps
an annoying speaker tone.

And, from the bickering on the linux-kernel list, it appears that a
release will not be forthcoming very soon.  :)
