And while I agree with this approach, being in the position of having to
monitor traffic for this company, and keeping logs of *everything* that gets
done, seen, touched, surfed, whatever, I do feel it was appropriate that we TELL
our employees that such information was being collected.
Yes, by law, as a company, everything collected belongs to the company, and
should also be protected by the company. And our basic rule is, unless someone
serves the company, or me as administrator for the company with a court order,
that information does not get released in any way shape or form. But, at the
same time, as an employee, they have the right to know that information is being
collected about them. What they do, where they go, their surf time, surf
locations, in- and outgoing email, everything. Part of our employee handbook
states this as well, so people are (mildly?) aware of that. Should anything
ever get out of our hands (be it through a court order, or theft), they
indemnify the company from any actions.
Personally I think having people know they're being watched also prevents
them from abusing the net. And since we enforced those terms we didn't have
anyone abusing the net anymore, be it upper management, or anyone else in the
company. Everyone is still allowed to surf the net (to some extend of course),
and they do this consciously. Everyone can (and does) receive personal email,
which we don't restrict either. But like I said, it's all being done a) to some
reasonable extend, and b) with everyone knowing that everything is being stored
offline on backup CDs and some day may or can be pulled up for whatever reason
the company sees fit.
