I setup a 24/7 ipmasq connection about a year ago via a DSL line. Mngt
wanted to know what employees were doing on the
web. We installed a commercial network sniffer (netXray). Upper management
was appalled to find out how much time a FEW employees were spending
surfing. (50 people in the office, 3 people abusing web time). The concern
was not even the sites which were being accessed, but that feeling that
surfing on company time is essentially stealing. We researched at great
length to publish a company policy. Both corporate trends, and legal
ramifications were studied.
The bottom line is that in the US, the company you work for owns everything
you do, see and use @ the workplace. Such data can be collected (and
legally should be to protect the company) and done with as the company sees
fit without employees consent or knowledge. This data can, and is,
ultimately used for termination.
The result of monitoring was that I'm now blocking http traffic to all but a
few upper management workstations. If someone needs access to browse,
there is a community workstation setup in plain view of all. big brother is
watching.

i use a simple linsniffer for this, found somewhere on the web. search
for "linsniffer" or send me PM, i can post it to you.
take care when collecting such information. i do not know about law in
u.s. or wherever you are from, but here in switzerland, you are
allowed to _collect_ the information but you have to make sure, not to
use it against the person, except there is quite a possibility, that
the person you are observing is missusing the web (e.g. looking at sex
sites, ...).
