If you can't ping, don't bother trying anything else. That's the most
basic thing. Try pinging only using IP addresses. If you ping, and it
fails, try running "arp -a" or "arp -an" to see what the ARP table looks
like. If it shows an entry for the other network card, it means your
networked machines can see each other. If there's only incomplete
entries, it means you have a very basic communication problem, like bad
cables, incorrect cables, using the wrong port on the hub, etc.
Once you get ping to work, then you can work on routing, DNS, and masq,
I assume. :)
