I use pppd's demand-dial feature continuously. I have a static IP, but
at one time I managed to configure it to work with a dynamic IP, as
well, which is not as obvious.
These seem to be the important options:
demand
idle 900
holdoff 30
defaultroute
209.44.42.49:209.44.40.10
In order for demand-dial to work, pppd needs to be able to sense traffic
trying to reach the internet. It does this by creating the "ppp0"
interface BEFORE the connection comes up. This is completely different
from how it normally operates. As such, this new interface needs to
have a real IP address, and a real point-to-point link partner
configured, as well as a route pointing to it. The IP address and
"defaultroute" options handle that.
Then, when pppd sees traffic appearing on the ppp0 outgoing interface,
it brings up the link, then sends the packets on. Sounds great? It is.
So, what if you have a dynamic IP? What then? Well, you can still fool
pppd into configuring the interface, with some options like this:
demand
idle 900
holdoff 30
defaultroute
10.100.1.1:10.200.1.1
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
So here you have configured the ppp0 interface with a completely fake IP
address and P-t-P partner. However, the last two options allow the
interface to switch to whatever IP address the remote side wants to give
you. Thus, as soon as your link comes up, your IP address will become
valid, and if you use /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr (and of course you
do, don't you?) then nobody will even notice.
