Thanks Hari.  I am going to leave the "USSR imperialism" alone since it does 
not matter so much today.  Or rather, it's not worth the opportunity cost of 
arguing about it for days.  But I do question this:

I think of "fascism" as a _mass_ movement of capitalist and petty capitalists, 
professionals, and others who are invested in preserving the status quo against 
a conscious working class; this mass movement is large enough to dismantle 
working class as well as independent social and civic organizations.  Do you 
think that process happened in Syria?  Do we need a different word than 
"fascism."
