Hi All,

ATU, Galway city Ireland is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Marine
Beacon Project, Fixed term contract

Essential Qualifications and Skills
• A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., Marine Mammal Ecology, Bioacoustics,
Environmental Science, or a related discipline) or, exceptionally, equivalent*
research experience (including industrial R&D).
• Expertise in acoustic monitoring and quantitative ecology with example
applications to fisheries monitoring
*EU defines PhD equivalent as 4 years fulltime research after primary degree.

The key objective of the Marine Beacon project is to address the impact of
bycatch on the decline of marine biodiversity by producing the knowledge and
tools to effectively reduce the bycatch and subsequent mortality of PETS within
European waters and beyond. Marine Beacon is funded through Horizon Europe and
the consortium has 21 partners including research, technology and fisheries
stakeholders from 9 countries. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at the
Atlantic Technological University in Galway city and will work on key
frameworks, including a best practice guide for bycatch monitoring of PETS as
well as developing a framework for the evaluation of bycatch mitigation trials,
devising guidelines and confidence scoring for their assessment. Further, noise
modelling will be carried out to determine the range and effect of sound
exposure from acoustic deterrent devices (ADD) on marine mammals and other
PETS, as well as on the marine soundscape. Acoustic data will be collected
through fieldwork, including experimental control trials, and outputs from this
work will encompass an environmental impact assessment, in addition to seasonal
acoustic soundscape maps of ADD usage. This Post Doc is funded under the EU’s
Horizon Europe work programme topic HORIZON-CL6-2023-BIODIV-01-5: Understanding
and reducing bycatch of protected species. https://marinebeacon.eu/

Duties include (but are not limited to):
• Design and carry out acoustic and behavioural field trials using ADDs across
a range of PETS.
• Developing statistical models for assessing the effects of ADDs.
• Producing technical reports/publications and conference papers on findings
from ADD trials and framework assessments.
• Participating in regular meetings with the project team to communicate
project results and progress.
• Working and interacting with other team members as required.
• Carrying out any necessary additional administration duties associated with
the project.
