Good point!

I'd say that, based on the responses in this thread so far, it is
reasonable to assume that rolling your own mail server, even at a hoster
with less than stellar reputation for keeping out bad actors, is still
possible. It takes some technical knowledge and putting in work to keep
a mail server running smoothly, but if the operator is OK with these
requirements, I would encourage them to go for it. Falling back to some
paid service at a later time is still possible, if the home grown
solution does not quite turn out as expected.
