I'm surprised and disappointed that Digital Ocean won't do anything to vouch for "yes, this customer is using this IP, and has been for $TIME".
I'm new to this list, so is there a thread in the archives that might discuss VPS hosts with clean IPs?
There are occasionally threads about small email servers. See the recent "the oligarchy has won" thread and the recent T-Online / Orange default block threads.
Is it better to use an external SMTP provider whose whole biz is having clean IPs?
That depends, what do you consider to be "better"? Do you mean less of your time / effort? Or do you mean fighting for the right to self host email?
Aside: Check out SPFBL's allow list service. I spent the one-time $3 per IP to list my two VPSs. I consider the price low enough that it's reasonable for me as an individual to be able to do. Read: It's within my reach.
I don't like the idea of needing to pay, but I think it is a small amount that demonstrates that I'm serious about trying to run a good mail server. At least more so than those that won't pay.
