I can make a case for boutique email providers (which is where I earn a living) to people who understand and appreciate the value of what a small provider can offer that the big guys don't. I know from direct experience that the bulk of the small business market can get all that they need in inbox hosting from MS or Google substantially cheaper than if they went to FastMail or Runbox or one of the companies I work for. There are also valuable features (office app integration, too-big-to-block, etc.) that Google and MS offer that small providers cannot.
