Back in the days before I retired, I worked with Exchange 4.0 --> Exchange 2003. At that time, Microsoft actually recommended that the Exchange box not be Internet facing. At the time, we used linux/sendmail in front of it, for both directions. Today, I would probably choose postfix.

Having Exchange as corporate mail server,  I 100% subscribe to the advice 
already provided by other listmembers: smarthost Exchange with a smaller and 
leaner MTA both ways (outbound and inbound).
And not only for DKIM sake, mind you!
