It's actually been pure spam in a few 2-3 week episodes starting last
June, but you might not have noticed if your MTA doesn't log what
fast-talkers say.
Apparently ~2 weeks ago it became the favorite of someone stupid enough
to use an antique stolen/sold Equifax list but smart enough to have
their spamware wait for the SMTP banner.

I REALLY miss the days when the price for registering a domain was a
short coherent paragraph justifying one's need for it.
