For example, Mac Eudora had a couple of extremely helpful features
with its rules: first, you could select a message and then
option-click to open the rules window, and the rules that matched the
selected message would be highlighted. Second, each rule showed the
date when it last acted, which made it easy to delete or update
obsolete rules.
Isn't it amazing that in 2025 we are still using Mac Eudora to define
the norms for MUAs to meet? Modern MUA authors must curse Steve
Dorner, Pete Resnick, et al. for having set such high bars so early.
That made me laugh, but it is absolutely true that Mac Eudora was
exceptionally well-designed for email power users.
There were a small group of very good engineers working on Eudora, not
just Steve and Pete. I don't know which features came from whom.
