I've been using app specific passwords in other situations for several
years. It's been an excellent solution for me.

I don't expect you to have to do that. An app specific password works
for me and this does not rely on app verification. Google hides the
feature (at least for me), but it's here:
https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
You don't need it unless/until OAuth stops working for the free Gmail
accounts in MailMate.
(App specific passwords are equivalent to what users need to do for
iCloud accounts.)
