There's not a lot of light anyone other than Benny, the developer, can
offer. This is clearly some sort of message data handling bug, and no
one but Benny can see the code.

This implies that it is a problem with a specific message. It is likely
to be a message with an incorrect MIME structure, a thing I've seen in a
lot of malware-linked spam to GMail accounts. If you can identify the
garbage message via the web interface or Mail.app and delete it, that
should work around the problem.
Also, you should use the Help->Send Feedback menu command to report this
to Benny.
