Which version of MM are you using ?

Did anything happen prior to this behaviour ?

You could try the following:
- make sure that there is NO network connected to your Mac (Wifi-of, . . .)
- start MM
- take “off-line” all source IMAP folders (or you could start by taking off-line the sources)
- take online one folder at a time

Eventually you could start MM from terminal and check what is logged there
