I’ve got the hang of smart folders and the ones I’ve created now contain messages from mail lists (I’m subscribed to several).

My suggestion is to add a rule to that smart mailbox that moves all mailing list e-mails to a "Mailinglist" folder. Then they will not show in INBOX anymore.

I do this for the logs and notices I get from various services and servers I run.

Everything else I file away in "Archive" after I have read/replied/flagged/deleted them, leaving the INBOX empty most of the time.

My goal is to have an Inbox that has none of these mail list messages and only contains the remainder of the day’s mail, mostly personal mail and junk.

Are you using SpamSieve <http://c-command.com/spamsieve/>? If not I highly recommend it and MailMate has built in integration with it.

I rarely see any spam in my INBOX thanks to SpamSieve.
