No.
I do have a keyboard shortcut for switching (thanks to a response from an earlier message to this list on the topic), but having to hit that every time gets tiresome.
I guess it would be best if the focus just stayed in the same place after switching.
Note, by the way, that ⌘↑ and ⌘↓ work even if the focus is in the message view.
