The best method I feel and practice is to go for the kids. Introduce alternatives and let themchoose the best. In the engineering college I studied (2000) even computer students used Pirated XP most of the time and the only linux they knew was Redhat. What I did was slip in Debian/slackware and other Linux CDs to them then FreeBSD, OpenBSD etc. Some migrate from windows and stay with linux, others progress to BSDs and some even end up at VMS once they are introduced to it. A few of the school kids I introduced to Linux through ubuntu are already abandoning it in favour of debian or Mint. I didn't havetoforce anything. Once you introduce stuff give them enough information to excite curiosity and try out stuff and it will spread. Even guys inmy office are ditching fedora/ubuntu for archlinux/slackware I am not telling one distro is better than other but what I am telling is if you can give people enough information then you could excite in them some thing that will explore Open Source Software and you will not need much lobbying about using FOSS instead of proprietry stuff. FOSS stuff are goodenough to bring addiction ;-) I have found introducing people to alternatives and making them choose creates stable converts than lobbying fanatically for ope source. >From 11 years of experience in injecting the FOSS virus to soceity in india and abroad ;-) We may not convince this generation but we can possess the next. And the bait is their sense of freedom and choice :-D cheers --Siju _______________________________________________ Indian Libre User Group Cochin Mailing List http://www.ilug-cochin.org/mailing-list/ http://mail.ilug-cochin.org/mailman/listinfo/mailinglist_ilug-cochin.org #[email protected]
