I agree that Computer and it's operating system is just a tool  to achieve our
objective.

The example of Mr. Russel is great and i have heard about him and his studio
from
couple of others

I will tell you where i am coming from

a) FOSS is adopted in places where there is "Demand Side Learning" ( I am
quoting this from a HBR article which i read some time back ) . In this case
Russel , Aniver , Santhosh , Praveen and others have taken extra effort to
understand the stuff ( This is an
example of demand side learning )

It is not the case with all.

b) When we work in a company , we are forced to use the tools which our
employer want you to work. Yes , there is option to switch companies. How many
are in a position to do that. Some of the names which anish mentioned do work
in Corporate companies to sustain them. ( Do not stump me by saying that one is
working in a company which
produces FOSS software and other develop private software kind of stuff !)

c)  What the guys show here is "Survivor's Bias" ( do not confuse with
Survivorship bias - that is anotether term ) . Sporadic success is not what we
should look for.

I will site another anecdote

I have seen some successful computer professionals who are college drop outs.
Can we generalize from this ? I hope , not. Some of those "Survivors" tell that
college education is sham. Fact of the matter is Educational system of india is
one of the most successful mass education scheme in the world ( It has
empowered millions . Mediocrity is the need
of the hour in a crowded place )

There are some people ( exceptions ) who have survived the proprietory software
"tide". Going with the wave can empower thousands , where as going against
something can
give success to a few.

regards
Praseed Pai

Praseed, I have to agree with Sebin on this.

People CAN make a living without essentially coding or doing sysadmin work.
Using GNU/Linux doesn't mean you're only a web-developer/sysadmin/programmer.

Today I had the honour of meeting Mr. Russel Khader from Libre Graphics Studio
Designs, Ekm North (His site, www.perpic.com is down).

Mr. Khader runs a design studio ENTIRELY on FOSS tools. The only Windoze laptop
he keeps is for his scanner, which he's going to get rid of shortly to switch
to
total FOSS tools.

I quizzed him regarding failure of Gimp to do CMYK colour channel etc., and he
was happy to sit down and demonstrate how he can retain CMYK channels in
Scribus, by using Krita (KDE).

He does brochures, visiting cards, flyers, you-name-it!

He also took time to explain how to rescue CorelDraw induced problems in files,
how to re-work on files which was produced by Windoze PhotoShop, and much more.
He has in-depth knowledge of image file formats, colour profiles, proprietary
tools compatibility issues, compression schemes and many more.

He was using Ubuntu Lucid, and a keen researcher on latest updates on FOSS
design domain. Also, he manages to keep his Scibus updated to the SVN repo one.

He dismissed my comment on the general opinion of pubilc, as "people can't make
a living out of free software". He himself is an example.

It was indeed a pleasure meeting him.
