Also it is a good idea to go for manual recompilation than installing Apache/Mysql/PHP using DEB package. I usually compile them myself in my machine. That will give more control over the installation files. I don't like package based installer because that will spread all the files in different parts. I always like to see the files in one place, so I go for the manual recompilation using the --prefix option in configuration. Using that you will be able to install all the files in one place say, /usr/local/apache, /usr/local/php etc. Also I feel that the performance is more in manual recompilation than package based installer, because the manual compilation will give hardware optimized binaries for the system.
But package based installer will be more easy to manage, upgrade etc, so you need to consider all the factors before setting up the server.
