The size of the partition mainly depends on your requirement. usually the home partition need more size because all the user data goes there. Usually there is not much space needed for var in a desktop Linux. But the case is different in a server system. All the log files and MySQL database files goes to var, so you need a big var partition, if you are going to store big databases and you are interested in keeping the log files for generating the statistics data later from it.
