Do you have internet at home?

Then do exactly as written.

Go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal

Type the following at the terminal '$', or you can select the line
given below starting from 'sudo..........-extras', then right click
and copy and then right click on the terminal and paste and then press
enter. Provide your password when asked to and just wait for it to
download stuffs from internet and configure itself. Once completed, it
will stop its activity and return to the $ prompt.

sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer amarok build-essential ubuntu-restricted-extras

This will install media players like vlc and mplayer and also amarok,
a good audio player. I believe after installing these, you should be
able to play media files (mp3 and movies). When you start playing mp3
using amarok, it might again ask for some additional files to be
downloaded automatically. Just let it download automatically and then
you will be able to hear your songs. If to watch a movie, right click
on the movie file and open them with vlc.

I hope this works for you. Please give feedback.

cheers
