I also had these experiences in my final years of Engineering. As the seminar topic I was interested in "Virtualisation" and they rejected the topic telling me that I should take some "REAL" IEEE topics not "VIRTUAL". What should I reply ? :)
This is due to the lack of Professionalism in teachers (Most of them are young and just-passed-outs who knows nothing about anything). Atleast they should understand this "Not everyone are Einsteins or Newtons" to do the IEEE standard projects :) Once our Principal told met "Linux is of no good in future as the HOD told me about the lack of features and support for Linux". As I was a bad boy in his perspective, I didn't say much. I agree with you. This is a serious issue to discuss and to be stopped. There are several motivated students in those colleges (unwilling to do what they planned) and they should not face this..
