Thanks for the response. To begin with I will start answerin the questions
one by one. First of all how can you spread linux in cochin. Well I dont know
if you are aware of all the latest distros creepign up in the linux world. Well
freshers need thinsg liek simplicity and gaurentee that there would be no harm
to their system by trying out linux. Well so live CDs shoudl work well. Also
they care more for ebtertainment and if it suits their needs they will get used
to that. There is a versionc alled Damn Small Linux which is 50 MB but contains
almost all teh features including a video player and network. People could be
introduced into the wold of linux with things like these. About how I was able
to spread linux the answer is this. SInce I was stayign in a hostel this was a
bit too easy. I amde people try out live CDs and also made them listen to songs
and Videos in Linux. The plugin suppost is excellent and the effect of the
music was so great that people started usign linux just for that. Slowly they
tried things like games, GIMP etc and I was able to help them play with the
stufs. Some really liked it and now 90% of the systems in the hostel have dual
boot and there are almost 6 different distros running in the systems. Guess
this is a good start.
Next question is what all thinsg can be done in cochin. Well I am not in a
position to tell that but I can give my comments on that. First of all what
kind of people do we want to educate?? Guess student will be the ebst since its
difficult to start with a middle aged mand and sit with him to explain linux
when he's half bothered to listen. So select the audience first. Then of thoose
in colleges and schools they could just talk with someone in charge and have
someone to run a linux course in parallel. Maybe someone from ILUG coudl help.
It just say once a week and if given enough importance it will survive. Another
thing for colleges mainly wanna be software engineers, is to make them realise
in the importance of linux and how it will help them to get a better job. Guess
thats a too good initiative for them to miss out. At least let them start and
maybe someone would get enough interested to bring out soemthign new. Presently
I dont think that bringing out a software or soemthing like that is possible
since we need to have a larger group and a better infrastructure.
To Mr. priyadarshan. Sir thanks for teh feedback. Talkign about projects in
mind I think I have one. Its about clustering. Just to use the Open MOSIX
technology and build a kinda cluster management tool. Another thing is to port
the Open Mosix patch from 2.4 series kernel to 2.6 series kernel. But I dont
think that I am professional enough to do anything good right now. I am still
studying. About coming to the frount for an initiative I dont know how much
that thign is fesiable becasue I sm in the engineering final year and guess one
knows of the trouble one need to go through. Now we are in teh middle of
university exams. Also got the big troubles like projects, seminars and
placements. We are working 7 days a week and its really a nsaty time of the
life. Well will try to find some time but can't promsie anything. At least hope
I will be able to help you out with some ideads. Sorry for boring all of you
with such a long mail. Hope everyone comes foreward to get somethign done by
