run "update-rc.d -f xdm remove" will remove the xdm from all
run-levels. you can start/stop xdm manually by
/etc/init.d/xdm start|stop

default is ice-wm. you can install gdm, and if you have installed
gnome you can choose b/w gnome & icewm. I am running kdm (1.1.2) 
in that I can s/w between kde and ice-wm. try xf86config for 
configuring x-windows.
