I've been reading up more on this, and the main disadvantage to iCloud mail seems to be spam filtering. Apple has a horrible spam filter in place, and it is hard to train that filter. Plus, reporting spam seems to involve forwarding the message to s...@icloud.com, which makes no sense at all.
