Yep, you can upgrade independently (yay Apple!) Just go to the App Store, find and download Maverix, and follow the instructions. The download is over 5gb, so have a solid internet connection and some time to kill. Your Bootcamp should not be affected at all, though it is always, always, always strongly recommended that you make a backup of important files just in case. Personally, I just went ahead and dug up an old USB hard drive, then used Time Machine to copy my Mac's hard drive. Now, if something goes terribly wrong (it sholdn't, but if it does) I have a complete backup and can be up and running in no time.
