I normally don't use the full spell checker. Instead, I hit cmd-semicolon to 
move to the next misspelled word (make sure you have interacted with the text 
first). I either correct the word, jump to the end (option-right) and get the 
suggestions that way, or vo-shift-m and find the suggestion I want or hit 
"learn spelling" to ignore it in future. I'm usually good about polcing my work 
for extra spaces, but am so used to copying things that I know when there is, 
or might be, an extra space or two that I should investigate. I've never heard 
of this proff-reading thing, I will have to check that out.
