Why don't you just turn the screen curtain on instead of lowering brightness? 
Or do you still need the screen to look at?

P.S. That blows my mind a little, Ricardo, that you discovered that connection. 
The last thing I'd think to experiment with in trying to solve a problem like 
that would be screen brightness. How bazaar.

No problem.  I guess we will need to turn down system brightness in settings.  
This is much easier on an iPad since brightness can be controlled from the app 
switcher though.
