I fixed it ! At least I think I have so far. The question of dealing with the 
mouse pointer was the key. When I went into the VO utilities menu, I came 
across the mouse pointer heading; the next option is a popup menu. I changed it 
to Ignore; it had been set to Follow or something. I'm not sure when or how 
this changed but it seems all good now.

So thanks for all the ideas and conversation. Chris, thanks for the extended 
debugging suggestions; that will be good reference in the future. These cursor 
and pointer tracking options can be confusing but do offer great flexibility 
when goofy apps may come into the mix.
