It is not illegal to jailbreak your device, there was a ruling in 2010 that the 
Federal Communications Commission deemed it to not to be inappropriate to 
jailbreak your device. However, last Saturday, started another thing that the 
Federal Communications Commission began in 2010. This is, it is illegal to 
unlock your device.
Jailbreaking your device provide you rude access to the device, and allows you 
to make any modifications to the device that you would like. Whereas, unlocking 
a device will allow you to utilize of that device that was designed for a 
specific carrier, on another carrier's network. The FCC no longer wants 
individuals to purchase phones at discounted prices, and then move them to 
better networks.

In my opinion, this is one of the easiest process is once you get it going, 
that there has been for jail braking iOS
