Hello,

I think this is due to a miss understanding of How, why, and when
enabling/disabling Voiceover becomes the default action when triple press of
home is used. For example, you said your friend does not use voiceover. This
means, they did not use Voiceover to set up their iPad. If this indeed the
case, they would have to manually go into accessibility settings and enable
Voiceover in triple press of home. Since they are not a VO user, this probably
was never done. They just turned on VO for you, and handed you the iPad as is.
But, if they were a VO user, and in the initial setup they triple pressed
home, Voiceover would have came on. And, it would have automatically been set
as the default action when triple press of home was used.

Many people have there devices setup in stores by sighted people. When this is
done, Someone will have to turn on Voiceover for you or, you enable Voiceover
with iTunes on your computer. A triple press of home will not work.
