Hi My guess is that it's because there are no external costs when developing a Mac app, unless you wish to have your app distributed through the app store or signed with an Apple developer id. When developing a commercial application for Windows on the other hand, you have the cost of not only the development tools such as visual studio, but also the cost of whichever Microsoft SDKs you need to use. In the case of VMWare, which needs to work at a very low level, you need quite a few expensive SDKs in order to do this and yes, you must pay for them if you wish to sell your product legally. Visual Studio express cannot, at least according to the license, be used to create commercial applications, i.e. if Microsoft discovered that you were doing this they'd have no problem taking you to court over it. By contrast, on Mac, all of Apple's official development tools are free of charge (in addition to being versions of pre-existing open source compilers such as Clang), so there's no need to recover these costs from the user. Also, software piracy rates are much lower on the Mac platform, and I think that's a combination of both the lower priced software and less users.
