One thing I wish vlc could do is pitch shifting. I often need to practice a song in one key but only have it in another; on Windows, I can just open up my favorite media player in the world, Mapler, and change the key as necessary. VLC cannot do this, unfortunately. I mention this because the original poster said they needed this for music practice, and it is common to have to change keys when practicing based on what the rest of the band wants to do with a song.
