Karen,

There are two different speech features.  You can activate, one, both, or 
neither of them.

  One is Dictation.  this is new to ML.  It allows you to dictate what you want 
to write any time that you are in a text field.  This feature is also on the 
newest iPad, and the iPhone 4s.  You can, however, accomplish similar things  
on an older iPhone using apps like Dragon Dictation.

The other is an option in Accessibility under System Prefs called Speakable 
items.  This you can configure to let you control many different things on your 
Mac, opening and closing apps, opening and closing documents, finding the time 
and date, and many other things.  It is closer to Siri on the iPhone 4s.  It 
was in older versions of the Mac OS, but it did not work very well.
