Mail can be left open almost all the time, unless you're in extreme cases of 
needing resources or don't have unlimited bandwidth and need to conserve.  If 
it is open, then messages can be displayed in Notification Center.  As stated, 
you can set the style of notification to none, banners or alerts.  Banners if 
where it probably SHOULD be left, since they fade away after a few seconds.  
Alerts stay there until you tell them to shove off.  The way to get only the 
last message announced is to choose "one item," in the pop-up menu just to the 
right of this.  I think the Badge app icon has to be left checked too.
