Yes, I got some stuff messed up a while back and since I'm a bit of a geeky guy 
and occasionally live dangerously, I went and deleted the entire mail folder in 
~/library.  then started over and none of any previous junk was around.  You 
might try that if you dare.  Personally, I did it from the terminal with the rm 
command.
