I wonder if it would be best to get an XLR preamp so you can use most any mic you want. I currently use a Shure SM81 for acoustic guitar:

but there are tons of mics and opinions to go with them when it comes to the "best" way to record an acoustic guitar. I use a regular Mackie mixer since I have a number of channels going, so I don't have a standalone XLR pre-amp. Poking around, this one seems nice:

for about $80. It has two channels and will output as both a mini-headphone, 1/4" phono plugs and USB. So you could use a 1/4" to mini cable to run it into your iPhone or use the USB to your mac. The USB is bi-directional meaning that you could also play audio back into the box and hear it on your headphones. Not sure if you can go both ways at the same time to, say, play along with accompaniment or a click track.

Hi,

I am experimenting with recording myself playing classical guitar on mac and
on iphone and would like to buy a good microphone that works with both iphone
and mac. I have iphone 4 and mac mini. Will upgrade with iphone 5 as soon as it
comes out.

Thanks to all of you audio pros for suggesting some possibilities.
