I've only had limitted exposure to classic view in Mail but from what
I remember, the subject, author, and date and whatever were in
separate cells of the message list table so while interacting with the
message table, try arrowing side to side in the table to see if you
can hear a column of subjects. Also if your mail is threaded and you
have it expanded, the subject might not show on the second and later
messages in that thread.

In the new view, arrowing up and down the message list gives me all
that info in a single read for each entry. It also tells me if the
thread is collapsed or expanded and if unread. That's one reason I
wanted to stick to the newer view and now that I got the preview thing
turned off, it's all good.
