I personally have found Open Office completely unusable under Lion. I understand that there used to be some accessibility under Snow Leopard but under Lion I cannot get any typing echo at all.
If it is wordProcessing you are after I would stick to Text Edit perhaps supplemented by the Free Bean Word Processor. I have bought Nisus Writer Pro and Pages but I must confess that I do not use them much, especially Pages which is a whole learning curve I have to get into. Unfortunately I do not currently have the time. If you are after a spreadsheet i understand Tables is a more intuitive spreadsheet than Numbers. I have not really investigated this yet as I am still using Excel under Fusion. I have heard Bento is an accessible database.
